We have reviewed over 150 laptops in a year. We can help you find the perfect match, whether you are looking for a powerful productivity tool, a great gaming system, or a multi-media machine to relax and watch a few movies, or both.

To make it onto our Best Laptop of 2021 List, the system must score at least 4 stars in our reviews and deliver the most important features to shoppers. We evaluate the design, comfort, keyboard and touchpad performance, value, and battery life.

Which laptops are the most popular right now?

Our top pick for the best laptop in 2021 is the Dell XPS13. The 1080p model of the laptop has an integrated Intel Iris Xe graphic and a 11th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU. It is perfect for light work and play, as well as content creation. The laptop’s vivid, bright display makes it great for watching videos. It’s extremely slim and lightweight, making it a great laptop for mobile professionals.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 convertible is a good choice for those looking for one. We recommend the Dell XPS 17 if 13 inches is too small. It has a powerful performance that makes this ideal for creative professionals, students, and mobile workers.

The MacBook Pro and MacBook Air M1 are our new must-haves for Apple enthusiasts. Apple’s new silicone is a significant step forward in Apple computing and the future of computers. The ARM-based chips offer an unparalleled amount of power, endurance, and performance that puts the Air, which is often underpowered to a level with other ultraportables.

If you are looking for a larger Chromebook, we recommend the Acer Chromebook 317. It is the first 17-inch ChromeOS laptop in the world.

What happens when one of Intel’s new Tiger Lake CPUs is inserted into a Dell XPS 13 computer? It’s even more amazing. It retains all of the great features we loved about the previous year’s model, including a smaller frame and four-sided InfinityEdge edge bezels. The keyboard is also larger. This refresh includes Intel’s 11th Gen Tiger Lake CPU, a host of promised features including a faster CPU and graphics performance, longer battery life, and more. Thunderbolt 4 as well as Wi-Fi 6 are included.

But can Tiger Lake live up the hype? Absolutely. You can play AAA games with the Intel Iris Xe integrated GPU. However, this is only possible on low settings. In many cases, the overall performance of the integrated GPU is also top-notch. Even better than Intel’s Evo standards, the battery life is two hours longer. The Dell XPS 13 laptop is for those who want a laptop that has beauty, power, and longevity.

The new era in Apple computing is here. Apple’s M1 custom SoC is the first step towards its conscious uncoupling with Intel. The ARM-based 5-nanometer chip contains 16 billion transistors. This is the highest number of transistors ever added by Apple. The SoC includes an eight-core processor, integrated graphic, Apple’s Neural engine, an improved image signal processing and Apple’s Secure Enclave. This laptop is faster and more powerful than ever before, making it a formidable competitor.

The MacBook Pro 13″ M1 is a powerful machine with the longest battery life. Apple Silicon, which is paired with Big Sur, gives you faster webpage loads and better webcam experiences. The new MacBook Pro is all that Apple promised and more.

The Acer Swift 3 is a slim, lightweight, silver-colored, and peppy performer that helps college-bound students make the transition to their next level of education. The Swift 3 has a stylish design and some chrome accents to add a little flair. The 11th Generation Intel Core i7 CPU delivers solid performance and solid rendering with the Intel Iris Xe graphics card.

The Swift 3 is a sturdy, ultra-thin laptop that’s budget-friendly and a great travel companion. It’s a small workhorse and performed well in a variety of benchmarks. It has a battery life of over 10 hours, which gives it a lot of staying power. It has premium looks and a comfortable keyboard. However, the display isn’t as bright and clear as we would prefer. It’s not a major problem for a laptop under $1,000.

Talk about bringing new life to a laptop. Apple’s M1 SoC is the Midas of processors. Everything Apple touches turns into gold. The MacBook Air’s new engine transforms it from a low-powered notebook that barely makes it to the top to one of the most powerful laptops on the market. With 14+ hours of battery-life, you can easily last a day without recharging.

Apple Silicon also adds iOS and iPadOS apps in the Mac App Store to enhance record-setting performance. Apple’s desktop OS macOS Big Sur has a stunning redesign, which means you get better webcam quality. Although the new MacBook Air has some flaws, it is the closest Apple has come to creating the perfect laptop.

5. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1

Best 2-in-1 laptop

Specifications

CPU: Intel Core i7-1165G7

GPU: Intel Iris Xe Graphics

RAM: 16GB

Storage: 512GB SSD

+Top-quality build quality +Long battery life+Fast Intel11th Gen CPUs

Avoidable reasons

-Not for everyone. Display could be brighter.

The new XPS 13 2-in-1 2-in-1 laptop is undoubtedly one of the most powerful 2-in-1s available. This shouldn’t be surprising. The XPS 13 was used by Dell to create the XPS 13 2-in-1. This laptop is almost identical, but can be transformed into a tablet.

The XPS 13 2-in-1 is more attractive than ever thanks to new features. The Intel 11th Gen Tiger Lake CPUs are a significant performance and graphics improvement over the previous generation. An IR camera has been added to the XPS 13 2-in-1, so that you don’t have to type in passwords anymore. The design remains unchanged, but Frost has been added to the lid to match the white option.

This is a great option for anyone looking for versatility, performance, and endurance.

RAM: 8GB

Storage: 256GB SSD

Display: 13.5 inches, 1504p

Size: 11.8 x 9.3x 0.7 inches

Weight: 3.2 pounds

There are many reasons to buy

+Superb screen, great performance, and great battery life

Avoidable reasons

-Sensitive Touchpad-No stylus support-Weak speakers

The Chromebook Spin 713 has carved a niche for itself among enthusiasts or professionals, students and mobile professionals. The powerful processor allows it to run heavier Android and Linux apps. The display is bright and vivid, and there are many ports available. With its 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-1135G7 CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, and Intel Iris Xe graphics, the Spin 713 was a strong performer. It also has a longer battery life than average, lasting 10 hours and 35 minutes in the Laptop Mag battery test.

RAM: 16GB

Storage: 512GB SSD

Display: 13.3-inch, 1080p

Weight: 2.5 pounds

There are many reasons to buy

+Excellent battery life+Clicky keyboard+Compact and slim chassis

Avoidable reasons

-No headphone jack

The ZenBook 13 is a testament to Asus’ commitment to solving problems and making our lives simpler. It beat the HP Spectre x360 13 and the Dell XPS 13 in the file-transfer and graphics tests. With its OLED display, it blew away all its competitors. Its clicky keyboard is also impressive for such a small, portable laptop. Notebooks with 13-inch displays are often cramped. However, the ZenBook 13 felt like a comfortable laptop.

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet may look like a boring journal at first, but when you open it, it turns out to be a small, colorful laptop with a 10.1-inch screen. The device’s transformative capabilities are not the only thing that appeals to users. We tested the battery life of the Lenovo Chromebook Duet and it lasted nearly 13 hours. This is more than the average Chromebook runtime of 10 hours. The Lenovo Chromebook Duet’s biggest selling point is its price. You can get a lightweight machine capable of handling all your web multitasking for as low as $300

Everyone loves getting more for their money. The Chromebook Duet offers a vibrant display and solid performance. The Chromebook Duet is so small that travelers can place it on an airplane tray table to do light work. We recommend the Duet to kids who are looking for a 2-in-1 device that can be used for light gaming, YouTube, Netflix, and web browsing. It’s also hundreds of dollars less than comparable-specced Windows 10 laptops. This is a great system for beginners and a secondary device for advanced users.

  • Laptop Mag: Why should you trust it?

Laptop Mag has been reviewing and testing laptops for more than two decades. Each year we test more than 150 models and subject each one to rigorous benchmarks. This gives us a complete picture about performance, battery life, and usability.

Each product is also tested by our expert reviewers to determine how it feels and looks in real life. We can compare notebooks and give an overview of how each product stacks up against the average laptop within its price range.

    How to test laptops

Laptop Mag has been reviewing and testing laptops for more than two decades. Each year we test more than 150 models and subject each one to rigorous benchmarks. This gives us a complete picture about performance, battery life, and usability.

Each product is also tested by our expert reviewers to determine how it feels and looks in real life. We can compare notebooks and give an overview of how each product stacks up against the average laptop within its price range.

Our goal when bringing a laptop to our lab is to test how it would perform if it was brought into your home. We use industry-standard benchmarks like 3DMark and Geekbench, but we rely heavily on real-world tests we have created in-house.

The Laptop Mag Battery surfs the internet at 150 nits brightness until it runs out of juice to test endurance. We use a huge spreadsheet macro to match 65,000 addresses with the names of our users. A video transcoder converts 4K videos to 1080p, and we also use the Geekbench4 synthetic test. Graphics prowess is measured using both 3DMark Ice Storm/Fire Strike and a variety of real games.

A colorimeter is used to measure the screen brightness and color gamut. Other instruments are used to determine the laptop’s key travel as well as ambient heat. For more information on benchmarking, see this page: How We Test Laptops.

How do you find the perfect laptop?

There are many things to take into consideration when shopping for a new laptop. We’ve compiled a list of our top picks for notebooks to help you make a decision.

Budget: What do you get for your money?

For less than $500, you can get high-quality Chromebooks and Windows laptops at a good price. Premium Ultrabooks and mainstream laptops can cost over $1,000, while premium Ultrabooks are more expensive at $700. While the best gaming laptops are expensive, you can still enjoy the most recent titles with decent frame rates with gaming laptops less than $1,000.

Screen Size: 12-14 inches for Portability

The screen size of a laptop can tell you a lot about how portable it is overall. A 12-inch, 13-inch or 14-inch screen is best if you plan to carry your laptop around with you. A 15-inch model is more practical if you plan to use your computer at tables or on desks, and you don’t intend to carry it around as much. Although some gaming rigs, media machines, and workstations have screens that are 17-18 inches, they can be difficult to transport.

    Clamshell or 2-in-1?

Today’s laptops have 2-in-1 screens that can either be bent back 360 degrees or detached so they can be used as tablets. A 2-in-1 laptop is a great option if you enjoy the flexibility of using your laptop as a tablet, whether you are using it for media consumption, drawing, or simply standing up. A traditional clamshell-style laptop can offer better features and a lower cost.

Battery Life: 8+ hours for Portability

Battery life is important, even if you don’t plan on using your laptop at your desk. You can work from home or the office without worrying about running out of battery life. We recommend a laptop that lasts more than 8 hours in the Laptop Mag Battery Test to ensure the most portability. Laptops that last more than 10 hours are the longest-lasting.

    Specs – 1080p / Core I5 / 8GB These are the Best Bets

While specs can be tedious, here are some key elements to consider. For mainstream performance and good RAM, a Core i5 CPU with 8GB of memory, a 256GB SSD, and a 1080p display are all options.

    • Screen ResolutionUnfortunately, 66% of laptops for consumers and 51% of business systems have low resolution screens. If you can, choose a display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (aka full HD or 1080p) or greater.
    • CPU:A Core i5 from Intel provides excellent mainstream performance. Core i3, Celeron, or Pentium CPUs are available in some budget systems. These processors can be used for basic tasks but not heavy multitasking. For high-end tasks like 3D modeling and video editing, get a Core i7 processor or a quad-core processor (serial numbers end in HQ or HK).
    • RAM 8GB is the ideal size for most users. 4GB is sufficient for budget systems. Secondary laptops and Chromebooks might have less.
    • Internal Storage: Unless you are a gamer, or a power user 256GB is likely to be enough. An SSD (Solid State Drive), if possible, is better than a hard disk. It will make your whole computer run much faster.
    • Graphics chip: Gamers, creative professionals and others need to research which GPU is capable of running their favorite software. The CPU’s Intel HD Graphics will please everyone else.
