Carried by Vincent Cassel, Albert Dupontel and Monica Bellucci, irreversible can shock by his violence – notably the raw scene of rape lasting 9 minutes and shot in sequence – but also return the guts by staging.
Indeed, Gaspar Noé's feature film contains sudden and spinning camera movements that make you dizzy. But where all the originality and the genius of irreversible resides, it is the narration of this story mixing sordid and love.
The intrigue is indeed told upside down and all the violence of the first part is counterbalanced by all the happiness and the joyful and positive emotions of the second.
Forbidden to under 16s with warning when it is released in theaters, irreversible is not to be put before all eyes and you should therefore know that this film contains two sequences of great violence which can strike certain sensitivities before launching viewing.
If the film had shocked Cannes when it was released, it found a unique place in the hearts of moviegoers, even if it continues to divide, as evidenced by his note spectators of 3 out of 5. This was a fascinating book to read. It’s amazing how a movie can still elicit such powerful feelings decades later. Its daring topics and cinematic risk-taking are well demonstrated by the fact that it generated discomfort at Cannes and was prohibited for children under the age of sixteen.
