CBSE Class 10 Science Syllabus 2023-24: The Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE has released the detailed and revised CBSE Class 10 Science Syllabus 2023-24 for the academic session 2023-2024 at the official website www.cbseacademic.nic.in. With the release of CBSE 10th Science Syllabus 2023-24, the students should get familiarized with the curriculum and start preparing themselves for CBSE Board Exams. As officially notified, CBSE conducts a single annual examination at the end of the session and no term-wise tests or examinations will be conducted further. The CBSE Class 10 Science Syllabus 2023-24 comprises 5 major units which have been explained below for the reference of class 10 students.

CBSE 10th Science Syllabus 2023-24

Science is the major subject in your class 10th CBSE Board, which in general consists of topics from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It is quite important to know the CBSE Class 10 Science Syllabus 2023-24 thoroughly, as it paves the way for the students in strategizing their board exam preparations in the most-effective manner. As per the official PDF notification that has been released recently at www.cbseacademic.nic.in, each unit comprises of few chapters and students can know the weightage of chapters through CBSE 10th Science Syllabus 2023-24 while confronting their final board exams. Have a look at the chapter-wise CBSE Class 10 Science Syllabus 2023-24 as listed below-

Unit I: Chemical Substances – Nature and Behaviour

Chapter- 1 Chemical Reactions

  1. Chemical equation
  2. Balanced chemical equation, Implications of a balanced chemical equation
  3. Types of chemical reactions- Combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, precipitation, endothermic exothermic reactions, oxidation, and reduction

Chapter-2 Acids, bases and salts

  1. Their definitions in terms of furnishing of H+ and OH– ions,
  2. General properties, examples and uses, neutralization, the concept of pH scale (Definition relating to logarithm not required),
  3. Importance of pH in everyday life
  4. Preparation and uses of Sodium Hydroxide, Bleaching powder, Baking soda, Washing soda and Plaster of Paris

Chapter-3 Metals & Non-metals

  1. Properties of metals and non-metals
  2. Reactivity series
  3. Formation and properties of ionic compounds
  4. Basic metallurgical processes
  5. Corrosion and its prevention.

Chapter-4 Carbon compounds

  1. Covalent bonding in carbon compounds
  2. Versatile nature of carbon
  3. Homologous series
  4. Nomenclature of carbon compounds containing functional groups (halogens, alcohol, ketones, aldehydes, alkanes and alkynes)
  5. Difference between saturated hydro carbons and unsaturated hydrocarbons.
  6. Chemical properties of carbon compounds (combustion, oxidation, addition and substitution reaction).
  7. Ethanol and Ethanoic acid (only properties and uses)
  8. Soaps and detergents.

Unit II: World of Living

Chapter-5 Life Processes

‘Living Being’. Basic concept of nutrition, respiration, transport and excretion in plants and animals

Chapter-6 Control and co-ordination in animals and plants

  1. Tropic movements in plants
  2. Introduction of plant hormones
  3. Control and co-ordination in animals: Nervous system
  4. Voluntary, involuntary and reflex action
  5. Chemical co-ordination: animal hormones

Chapter-7 Reproduction

  1. Reproduction in animals and plants (asexual and sexual) reproductive health-need and methods of family planning.
  2. Safe sex vs HIV/AIDS
  3. Childbearing
  4. Women’s health

Chapter-8 Heredity and Evolution

  1. Heredity; Mendel’s contribution- Laws for inheritance of traits
  2. Sex determination: brief introduction; (topics excluded – evolution; evolution and classification and evolution should not be equated with progress).

Unit III: Natural Phenomena

Chapter-9 Reflection & Refraction

  1. Reflection of light by curved surfaces; Images formed by spherical mirrors, center of curvature, principal axis, principal focus, focal length, mirror formula (Derivation not required), magnification. Refraction; Laws of refraction, refractive index.
  2. Refraction of light by spherical lens; Image formed by spherical lenses; Lens formula(Derivation not required); Magnification. Power of a lens.
  3. Functioning of a lens in the human eye, defects of vision and their corrections, and applications of spherical mirrors and lenses.
  4. Refraction of light through a prism, dispersion of light, scattering of light, and applications in daily life (excluding the color of the sun at sunrise and sunset).

Unit IV: Effects of Current

Chapter-10 Electricity Ohm’s law;

  1. Electric current, potential difference, and electric current.
  2. Ohm’s law
  3. Resistance, Resistivity, and Factors on which the resistance of a conductor depends.
  4. Series combination of resistors, parallel combination of resistors, and its applications in daily life.
  5. Heating effect of electric current and its applications in daily life.
  6. Electric power
  7. Interrelation between P, V, I, and R.

Chapter-11 Magnetic effects of current

  1. Magnetic field, field lines, field due to a current-carrying conductor, field due to current carrying coil or solenoid
  2. Force on a current-carrying conductor
  3. Fleming’s Left Hand Rule
  4. Direct current
  5. Alternating current: frequency of AC
  6. Advantage of AC over DC
  7. Domestic electric circuits.

Unit V: Natural Resources

Chapter-12 Our Environment

  1. Eco-system,
  2. Environmental problems
  3. Ozone depletion
  4. Waste production and their solutions
  5. Biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances

CBSE Class 10 Science Syllabus- General Instructions

1. The total Theory Examinations will be 80 marks and 20 marks weightage shall be for Internal Assessment.

2. Internal Assessment – Maximum Marks 20

3. Subject Enrichment in the form of Practical/Laboratory work should be done throughout the year and the student should maintain a record of the same. Practical Assessment should be continuous. All practicals listed in the syllabus must be completed.

4. Portfolio to be prepared by the student- This would include classwork and other samples of student work.
