Top 9 characters who came out as LGBT, a nice surprise

A chance for the kids of the new generation: in addition to having today’s cartoons better than those before, they have the right to children’s programs with LBGT characters. Something you didn’t see often in the productions of previous decades. Luckily, even some of the pop culture characters we’ve known have ended up coming out as LGBT. Not too soon !

1. Vera in Scooby-Doo

If fans of the animated series knew that Vera was a lesbian, none of the episodes of Scooby-Doo had ever addressed the question of her sexual orientation head-on, despite a few clues left here and there. This has finally been the case since October 2022 with the release of the trailer for the special Halloween film “”Trick or Treat Scooby Doo”” where we see Vera having a big crush on the wicked Coco Diablo.

2. Mr. Ratburn in Arthur

Yes, if you have followed this (great) cartoon from our childhood until the 22nd season, then you could see the students of the school of Lakewood being invited to the wedding of their teacher, Mr. Ratburn. And surprise! He enters the arms of Patrick, her future husband, while all the kids thought he was going to marry a woman. Best plot twist in history

3. Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter

Very few people had understood Dumbledore’s sexual orientation before the public reading of “Deathly Hallows” made in New York by author JK Rowling in October 2007. It must be said that the clues were rather well hidden. But JK Rowling confirmed, during this event, the belonging of our pref director to the LGBT community by explaining: “To tell the truth, I always thought that Dumbledore was gay… Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and in was horrified when he showed himself in his true colors. Well, on the other hand, that didn’t stop the writer from being transphobic afterwards, but that’s another story.

4. Robin Dancing Batman

Head to the comic book universe with DC Comics. After decades of ambiguity, the character of Robin has finally revealed his sexual orientation in the 6th volume of “Batman: Urban Legends”. In this comic, Tim Drake accepts the date offered to him by his friend Bernard, thus coming out as bisexual. On the other hand, we also want a date with Robin in fact.

5. The God of Mischief in Loki

While Marvel has never spoken about the God of Mischief’s bisexuality, Disney+ has dealt with it in the Loki series. Thus, in the 3rd episode of the series, while Loki exchanges with Sylvie on their former relations, he confides to having had princes and princesses as suitors. Rather eloquent as a revelation.

6. Waylon Smithers in The Simpsons

So yes, we’re not going to lie to each other, everyone had small (big) doubts about the sexuality of Smithers who was, if we can say, “Burnssexual” since the very first season. Still, his homosexuality had never really been revealed until the 27th season. In the episode “The Burns Cage”, Smithers ends up confessing his love to Mr. Burns (who of course rejects him). Result, Smithers finally goes out with a man named Julio and all is well that ends well. Clear, clean, precise.

7. Princess Bubblegum and Marceline in Adventure Time

In the episode The Lord of the Gates of the last season of Adventure Time, we can see the two heroines Princess Bubblegum and Marceline exchanging a long kiss for the first time. But this episode was the subject of controversy, because this relationship would come from a canonized fan-fiction, that is to say a romance imagined by fans of the cartoon, used to increase the Adventure Time audience. However, series creator Pendleton Ward clarified that Marceline and Chewing-Gum have been together in the past, but that these scenes were never aired due to legal compulsion.

8. Geulefor in Dragons

So yes, we are talking about a secondary character, but visualize this vivking blacksmith with a wooden leg and a missing hand. Well, imagine that in the second part of the saga, Gueulefor makes an allusion to his homosexuality. Indeed, after having witnessed a headache between Valka and Stoïk the brute, Gueulefor launches that it is because of these disputes that he will never marry. That “and something else”… This line was added by Craig Ferguson, who plays the English voice, during the dubbing.

9. SpongeBob SquarePants in SpongeBob SquarePants

So I grant you, SpongeBob isn’t gay or bisexual. He’s actually asexual, which is why he’s part of the LGBTQIA+ community, which encompasses a wider spectrum of sexual orientations. It was the creator of the cartoon, Stephen Hillenburg, who made this revelation in 2005, explaining that real underwater sponges are asexual and that he wanted to avoid looking into potential crushes of SpongeBob SquarePants because the latter is “too innocent” to have a relationship.
