Released in 2022, the film Elvis signed Baz Luhrman retraces the life of the King of Rock'Noll, from its first successes until his death in 1977. This musical biopic brought together more than 1.2 million spectators in theaters, a success largely due to the quality of interpretation of his main actor, Austin Butler.
One of the biggest actors in the cinema is responsible for him
So little known to the general public, it is now among the most essential young actors in American cinema. But to obtain the role of Elvis, Austin Butler had to confront all the other actors of his generation, and submit to a long casting process.
However, Austin Butler had an advantage over all of his competitors: Denzel Washington's recommendation. The legendary American actor had indeed gave the reply to Austin Butler on the Broadway boards for the adaptation of the room The ice cream dealer has passed. Very impressed by professionalism, Denzel therefore decided to call Baz Luhrman, although the two men never worked together.
“I then received a call from Denzel, which I did not know, to tell me how much this young man had a professional ethics that he had never seen before”said the Australian director in the film's press kit. Denzel Washington also guaranteed the ability of the young actor to be able to endure the hours of preparation and makeup necessary for the role.
Blend into the skin of Elvis, literally
Even before passing his first hearing, Austin Butler has completely imbued the role. “I became totally obsessed with the universe of Elvis. I started to read and view everything I could about the life of Elvis, his friends, his relationships. I only listened to his music. Before the auditions, I sent to Baz [Luhrmann] A video where I was seen playing in the piano and singing unchained melody “ he reveals in the film's press kit.
The prostheses, especially when he embodies Elvis in the last years of his life, have greatly helped him for his interpretation of the King: “When I put on this magnifying costume, it seemed really very heavy. (…) My lungs were compressed, I could only breathe in a superficial way and I was really very hot. It gave a feeling of claustrophobia and it made me deeply sad, because Elvis probably felt the same thing.”
His performance in Elvis has earned many prices in Austin Butler, including the Golden Globes and Bafta for best actor. Named for the Oscar for best actor in 2023, he was however beaten by Brendan Fraser, also a breathtaking performance in the film The Whale.
