We saw “a simple accident” from Iranian Jafar Panahi. The film, which has won the 78th edition Palme d'Or tonight, will be released at the cinema on September 10.

And the Palme d'Or 2025 is awarded to … a simple Jafar Panahi accident! Enemy in his own country, Jafar Panahi continues to tell stories. A rebellious spirit which arouses respect and admiration as the Iranian government did everything to muzzle it: a 20 -year sentence of prohibition to film, 14 years of prohibition to leave the territory, a conviction to six years in prison in 2010 for “Propaganda against the system“And seven months of detention interrupted by a hunger strike in 2023.
This 78th Cannes Festival was an event just by the simple fact of its presence.
A simple accident, his eleventh feature film, described with a mysterious synopsis composed of only seven words: “After a simple accident, the events are linked …“Considered from its projection as one of the big favorites for the Palme d'Or, here is what we thought of the film.
Human instinct and morality
A simple accident is a revenge film. A mechanic (Vahid Mobasheri), formerly accused and imprisoned for “propaganda against the regime“, believes to recognize one of his old executioners. Impossible to have a clear heart since he has never been able to see his face. He only recognizes him by the noise made by his leg prosthesis when he moves.
The former prisoner, determined to make him pay for his five years of life stolen, kidnaps him. Former victims of the same man join this plan. All share the same motivations but are still uncertain to hold the real culprit.

Jacovides-Moreau / Bestimage Jafar Panahi on May 20, in Cannes, during the climb of his film's steps, “a simple accident”.
Who has never felt the visceral need to take revenge? Jafar Panahihimself persecuted, purges his demons to question our human instinct and our morality through this film. Above all, it shows that the border between the status of executioner and a victim is often tiny.
Black humor and a striking finish
A simple accident is an amazing political thriller. Composed of black humor and some absurd sequences, it is not necessarily the anxiety -provoking film that one imagines and this, despite its important subject. Nevertheless, this light tone disappears in its last dark and striking act.
The staging is simple and refined – fixed plans and several sequence plans – and the interpretation of all the actors is excellent. Like the characters, the spectators constantly doubt and question their own choice. Jafar Panahi releases his audience with a final plan that has not finished haunting the spirits. One of the greatest moments in the film.
