‘American Idol’ Host Ryan Seacrest on 2020 Contestant Courtney Timmons and His Crying Meme

If you googled Ryan Seacrest lately or follow him on any social media platform, you’ve probably seen some photo of the American Idol host in tears. Highlighting the snapshot, Ryan posted a series of memes that his team had created using the image.

“Remind me not to cry on TV. The team won’t stop with the memes,” he joked on Instagram below on March 3.

But now that a month and a half has passed, the Living with Kelly and Ryan co-host shares the story behind the meme – and it’s one that will make your heartache if you don’t understand it, Idol, earlier this year.

During the audition process for season 3, Courtney Timmons accidentally missed the deadline for her chance to try. Ryan went by and, not knowing his situation, saw Courtney looking sad and sitting outside the building. When she told him what had happened, Ryan did something he had never done before: he told the 22-year-old singer to accompany him, took her to the elevator and placed her right in front of the judges. “No one has heard it, we have no idea what it looks like,” Ryan told the judges. Much to everyone’s surprise and joy, Courtney owned his hearing, singing a powerful rendition of Andra Day it’s “Rise Up”.  After Katy told Courtney that she was going to Hollywood, Ryan (and Katy!) Started to cry.

“Sorry, I’m like a parent, I’m crying,” said Ryan, trying to hold back more tears.

Although Courtney was eliminated as a Hollywood Week duo, she finally made her dream come true thanks to Ryan. And now we know the truth behind the crying meme, which Ryan spoke about again on Sunday evening.

Once Ryan’s fans saw his Instagram and discovered the whole story behind the photo, many were significantly moved. “I love the way you wear your heart on your sleeve Ryan!” a fan wrote. “I love it. Your reaction – you’re right. Just like a proud parent,” said another. “Omg, how could you not get emotional! Amazing! Ryan, you’re a bombshell. ♥ ️???,” wrote another fan.

But perhaps the sweetest message of all was displayed by Courtney herself. She wrote on Ryan’s Instagram: “Thank you so much, Ryan, for what you did for me that day, I will be forever grateful.”
