Benfica, 2007-2010

Di María played at Rosario Central in Argentina from 2005-2007 before joining the Portuguese Primeira Liga club Benfica for a transfer fee of €22 million. In 2014, he joined English Premier League club Manchester United for a record £59.7 million (a fee then paid by a British club for a football player), after beginning the season on fire – he earned the September 2014 prize for United’s Player of the Month – but then his form dropped off precipitously in the following months.

Paris Saint-Germain

With Madrid, he made the most of his final year at the club in 2014-15, before leaving for the French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain to the tune of €65 million in 2015. On top of it all, Di María won his fifth Coupe de France with PSG in 2021, and secured his fifth and final Ligue 1 title with PSG in 2022; he ended his seven-year stint with PSG with 92 goals and assists, the latter still the club record.

Juventus

In 2022, Di María signed for one of Italy’s biggest clubs, Juventus, as a free agent. September that year, he made his 100th Champions League appearance. Despite his efforts, Juventus missed out on the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in a decade and he was plagued by hamstring issues throughout his time there.

Benfica, 2023-2024

In 2023, Di María left for his former club Benfica, where he would help them win the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, before leaving the club at the end of the season.

The same year, he made his senior debut for the Argentina national football team as well. In 2010, Di María made his first FIFA World Cup debut, helping Argentina reach the quarterfinals of the tournament. He was on the rostrum once again in 2014, although this time his tournament ended prematurely as he was injured. In the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Di María and Argentina were eliminated in the round of 16.

His last couple of years of international competition for Argentina were his most productive. In 2021, he won Argentina the Copa América, scoring the lone goal of the final against Brazil. The next year, Argentina – led by their veteran playmaker – lifted another trophy with a thrilling 4-2 win over France in a first-time FIFA World Cup final held in Qatar.

It was Argentina’s first World Cup title since 1986. As the final whistle sounded, Di María was draped in an enormous Argentine flag, his face contorted in emotional relief. In 2024, his final season wearing the embroidered Albiceleste shirt of the Argentina national team, Di María led his country to their fifth Copa América title, winning in the final against their cross-rivals, Brazil. Argentina can now boast of having won 16 Copa América titles in its history. His final trophy with the national team, his second Copa América medal, came at the tournament in 2024.
