After a successful first season and a second half-tone season according to some fans, the third season of this post-apocalyptic series noted 4.3 out of 5 should make everyone agree.
It was one of the event series of the year 2023. With millions of views on HBO and the Max platform in the world, this adaptation of a famous video game franchise won the fans of video games as much as neophytes.
The first season of The Last of Us, signed Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, was a critical and public success. As a reminder, this post-apocalyptic fiction recounts the adventures of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in an America ravaged by an epidemic caused by the Cordycepts mushroom.
After the success of the first salvo of episodes, this horrific science fiction series was expected at the turn for its second season broadcast this year. But the new episodes of The Last of Us, adapting part of the second video game The Last of Us: Part IIreceived a mixed reception on certain points.
Despite certain criticisms, The Last of Us has already been renewed for a season 3 which should appeal to some and reassure others, according to the first information revealed and confirmed by the coshowunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
Who will be the main character of season 3 of “The Last of Us”?
Despite the fear of hateful comments, the character of Abby, embodied by Kaitlyn Dever, was ultimately fully welcomed by the public of The Last of Us. And fans should therefore be happy to know that Abby, antagonist of season 2, will be the main character of the future season of the series.
It is not a surprise for those who have played video games since the narrative frame is similar. After Joel's death, killed by Abby, Ellie tried to take revenge on Abby and finds himself in Seattle with Dina (Isabela Merced), then Jesse (Young Mazino) and Tommy (Gabriel Luna), for 3 days until Abby finds them.
Thereafter, we discover Abby's point of view during these three days in Seattle until returning to the confrontation. The last episode of season 2 of The Last of Us ends with a step back. As in video games The Last of Us: Part IIwe come back to the 1st day of Seattle, this time on the side of Abby.
Neil Druckmann admitted to an interview for The Hollywood Reporter That Craig Mazin and he were surprised that HBO let them change the structure of the series, giving them the creative freedom to follow their vision of the series.
“These decisions were exactly what history demanded, and even now, I find it hard to believe that they have let us structure the series in this way”he admits, “We have just finished season two, and season three will show off – be careful spoiler – kaitlyn”.
What to expect from season 3 of “The Last of Us”?
The creative freedom left by HBO to the showrunners of The Last of Us therefore allows them to be faithful to the narrative structure of the video game The Last of Us: Part IIwith some scriptwriting changes all the same.
Even if it can take over some, it is the most adequate way to honor video games. “I was sure they would not let us do this when we started adaptation, but they looked at what makes, I think, the story so special”explains Neil Druckmann, “They left us not only time, but also the creative freedom necessary to make these decisions, and I think the public really appreciates that”.
Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin briefly gave an overview of what fans can expect from Abby's season. “It's more a season of water than a fire season”revealed Neil Druckmann. This enigmatic teasing was confirmed by Craig Mazin: “It's a wealthy season than a warmer season”.
Fans of video games can understand these mysterious allusions given the course of Abby to Seattle in The Last of Us: Part II where she is confronted with many fights in the rain in Seattle and several passages to the aquarium, an important place for Abby and already introduced in season 2 when Ellie kills Owen (Spencer Lord) and Mel (Ariela Barer).
This does not mean that and the others will be neglected. In an older interview for Hollywood ReporterCraig Mazin had indicated that the next season “will offer much more flexibility [pour raconter des histoires secondaires]””. Abby and his group will be in the foreground, unlike Ellie, Dina and the others, but the showrunner does not exclude flesh out the history of the characters, who will pass to the background.
One of the most obvious choices would be a long flashback centered on Tommy (Gabriel Luna): “Perhaps an foray into the universe of Joel and Tommy terrorizing the countryside, we will never know. I would not have imagined that we would have a scene on Joel's father before writing the season. [Tommy] was in war, and we also know that for a while, he and Joel committed fairly serious misdeeds. There is therefore the possibility of discovering this other facet of Tommy, which now consists in keeping the promise he had given to his brother “.

The third season of The Last of Us, already ordered by HBO, will certainly be longer than the second season according to Craig Mazin, who was to give way to the death of Joel (Pedro Pascal).
“She is so impactful”he explained to Collider,, “It is such a narrative bomb that it is difficult to detach from it. We cannot really take a break, put ourselves aside and tell a story like that of Bill and Frank”.
But for season 3, Craig Mazin believes that they will have more time to develop characters and stories, leaving the possibility of a season 4 to loom on the horizon. “It is certain that it is impossible to finish this story at the end of the third season”estimates the showrunner, “Hopefully we will attract enough audience to return and finish the series with a fourth season. This is the most likely outcome.”
The first two seasons of “The Last of Us” are available on the Max platform.
