Discovery+ raises price for ad-free subscriptions

Phil Nickinson/

The Discovery+ streaming service survived the mega-merger that gave rise to Warner Bros. Discovery, and still exists following the launch of the combined Max service. But now we see more people adopting this change as Discovery+ has announced a pricing increase.

The “ad-lite” option – the option in which on-demand content contains advertising – remains unchanged in the US but if you want to get rid of the ads, you’ll have to pay $9 per month going forward. From $7 per month. (If you do the math, that’s about a 29% increase.)

Canada is seeing the same ad-free price increase, from $7 to $9 Canadian. The ad-lite option is also increasing by a dollar (or a penny) to $6 Canadian per month.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s press email says existing customers will see the increase in their next billing cycle or by November 2. (Whichever comes first, really.) The email says this is the first price increase imposed by Discovery+. US and Canada since its launch in January 2021.

Why is Discovery+ getting more expensive? Same reason as always, no doubt. However the official answer is that “It will allow us to continue to deliver unforgettable stories across food, home, relationships, true crime, paranormal genres – and much more.”

So if you want to get HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Animal Planet, Lifetime, and more, get ready for another price increase. Or if you still want to kick the tires, just remember there’s a free trial of Discovery+.
