Stephen King is a prolific author, so that Hollywood likes to draw in his bibliography to develop films and series. In 2019, the king of horror and fantasy published a new novel, entitled “The Institute”.
The latter tells the story of Luke Ellis, a kidnapped 12 -year -old genius who wakes up in an establishment full of children. They all got there in the same way as him and they all have unusual capacities such as telekinesis and telepathy. In a neighboring town, Tim Jamieson, a former police officer who came to make a new start, ignores that his tranquility will be short -lived, because his way and that of Luke are intended to cross.
One of Stephen King's best novels
The criticism is enthusiastic and the fans rush en masse to buy it: “The Institute” ranks quickly in New York Times Best Seller List where it will remain for 21 weeks. The novel also wins various prizes and receives the approval of a certain George RR Martin who devoured him in a few nights…
That year, the showrunner David E. Kelley and producer Jack Bender – who worked together on Mr Mercedes by Stephen King – offered the adaptation rights. But it was not until 2025, 6 years later, to discover the result in images.
The first images of The Institute
It is the American channel MGM, via its MGM+platform, which produced this adaptation of “the Institute”, carried by Ben Barnes (in the role of the cop), Joe Freeman (who camps the young hero) and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds).
The trailer would almost remind us of Stranger Things and the plot around Eleven. Navigating between science fiction, fantasy and horror, this series could well be the beautiful surprise of summer, if the quality is there.
For the moment, The Institute has no broadcaster in France but we hope that by its launch on July 13, this will be the case.
