Fashion Faux Pas: 7 common men’s fashion mistakes you should avoid |

Let’s face it, none of us are perfect. We’ve all dropped a clanger when getting dressed and ready for the day, probably without realising. Maybe we’ve worn a shirt back-to-front or gone the whole day with an unzipped fly.

All that said, good fashion doesn’t just extend to the clothes on your back, but the entirety of your look. The way in which we carry ourselves is becoming more and more important in the current climate, so here are 7 ways in which you can avoid being the butt of the joke.

1. Look after your teeth

If you look after your teeth, they will look after you. Not only is looking after your dental hygiene important from a health perspective but looking after your smile can do wonders for your self-confidence. It’s also worth carrying breath freshener with you when out and about. Break free of that old British stereotype of having terrible teeth.

2. Too much hair gel

If getting ready for a date, this one is always a danger. Sure, we want to look good, and using hair product is a valid and logical way to do this. But once we cross that line from suave to greasy, it’s difficult to row back. In this instance, a little really does go a long way.

3. Low V-necks are a no-go

The year is 2007 and everyone else at the house party is wearing one of those low V-neck shirts from Topman as Arctic Monkeys’ latest album plays on the stereo. We should never forget these good old days, but attempts to revive certain trends should probably be avoided…

4.Keep an eye on your size

Our sizes are always subject to fluctuation, so it’s always important to keep an eye on what fits. Sometimes it’s hard to admit that something is too big or too small for us, but it’s important to ask ourselves if something truly fits us. Thankfully high quality and well fitted shirts for men that keep up with modern fashion trends aren’t too difficult to come by.

5.Check your arm and leg length

The absolute worst thing you can do is wear a jacket for which the sleeves are too long, leaving you looking as if you’re wearing your dad’s jacket. The same goes for trousers when you find yourself treading on your trouser bottoms. Take the opportunity to get yourself measured up and avoid such a fate.

6. Make sure your tie is the right length

Much like with sleeves and trousers, when wearing a tie for those special occasions, it’s very important to ensure it’s the right length. If it’s too long, you could end up looking as if you have no idea what you’re doing. Too short, and you’ll resemble your teenage self in school uniform. Nobody wants that.

7. Too many accessories

As with hair gel, less is most definitely more. A nice watch will draw the eye, but as the old saying goes, too many cooks spoil the broth. Try not to overdo the accessories. The last thing you want is for all your flashiness to draw the wrong kind of attention.
