A comedy by Jean Girault
Released in 1976, it is the police comedy in the holy year, produced by Jean Girault (which was notably known for his multiple collaborations with Louis de Funès such as the gendarme saga).
Jean Gabin embodied the so-called Max Lambert, an old ugly imprisoned in Melun prison which escaped alongside Pierre Bizet (interpreted by Jean-Claude Brialy). Both disguised as church men, they went to Rome in the hope of recovering a buried nestle at a small chapel.
Nice little success having brought together 1.2 million French spectators in dark rooms, the holy year marks the first (and therefore the only) collaboration between Gabin and Girault.
Two weeks before the film's release, the actor made one of his last public appearances, officiating as president of the first César ceremony. Supposed to play the main role of the cat and Claude Lelouch's mouse later, he was finally replaced by Serge Reggiani.
