Online Application Process (Step-by-Step)
Note: The process varies slightly by state, but the core steps remain the same.
1. Visit Your Official State Portal
Do not use private agency sites. Use ONLY government portals ending in .gov.in or .nic.in. (See State List below).
2. Login / Registration
-
Look for “Citizen Login” or “E-Services” on the home page.
-
New Users: Click “New User Sign Up”. You will need the Head of Family’s Aadhaar and Mobile Number to create an account.
-
Existing Users: Login using Login ID/Password or OTP sent to the registered mobile number.
3. Select the Service
-
Once logged in, look for a menu option labeled: “Card Modification”, “Add New Member”, or “Member Deletion”.
-
Example: In Bihar, it is under “RCMS” > “Login” > “Edit Application”. In Maharashtra, it is under “Ration Card Maintenance”.
4. Fill the Application Form
-
For Addition: Enter the new member’s Name (as per Aadhaar), Father/Husband’s name, Date of Birth, Gender, and Aadhaar Number.
-
For Deletion: Select the member’s name from the list and choose the Reason for Deletion (Death/Marriage/Shifted).
5. Upload Documents
-
Upload the scanned copies of proofs mentioned above.
-
Crucial: Ensure the photo/text on the scan is readable. Blurry documents are the #1 cause of rejection.
6. Submit and Get Acknowledgment
-
Click Submit. You will receive an Application Reference Number (ARN) via SMS.
-
Save this number. You cannot track your status without it.

-

Common Problems & Solutions
1. Error: “Aadhaar Already Exists”
-
Reason: The member is already listed in another Ration Card (e.g., parents’ card).
-
Solution: You MUST get a Deletion Certificate (NOC) from the previous Ration Card first. You cannot be in two cards.
2. Error: “Data Mismatch / Name Mismatch”
-
Reason: Spelling in the application is different from Aadhaar.
-
Solution: Enter the name exactly as it appears on the Aadhaar card (including spaces/initials). If Aadhaar is wrong, update Aadhaar first.
3. Error: “OTP Not Received”
-
Reason: Mobile number not linked to Aadhaar or Ration Card.
-
Solution: Update your mobile number in the “Update Profile” section of the portal or visit the Aadhaar center to link your mobile.
4. Error: Website Not Opening / Server Time Out
-
Reason: High traffic on state servers.
-
Solution: Try accessing the portal late at night (after 10 PM) or early morning (before 8 AM).
5. Problem: Dealer Refuses to Give Rations after Addition
-
Reason: The Point of Sale (PoS) machine is not updated yet.
-
Solution: It takes 1-2 months for the machine data to update after online approval. Carry the online approval printout (e-Ration Card) to the dealer.
