Your Human Hair Wig

Could this be the end of your wigs?

If your wig is tangled and matted, you could be having second thoughts about handling them. Nobody enjoys dealing with such a situation, so it is best to know how this can be avoided and what causes it.

Why do your human hair wigs get tangled and dry?

The following factors are the main causes:

  • Lack of or reduced natural oils
  • Low quality of hair
  • Constant exposure to hard water and seawater, causing your hair to dry up
  • Prolonged exposure to sunlight which makes your extensions brittle
  • Exposure to chlorine, rendering the hair unmanageable

All these factors, to some extent, work towards reducing the quality of your human hair wigs. The effect may not be noticeable right away, but after constant exposure, your hair’s porosity is significantly reduced and it becomes dry and brittle.

How can you restore the softness of your human hair?

Over time, human hair wigs of all brands, qualities, and origins will begin losing their shine. However, they can be revived if the correct measures are put in place. Proper care will restore their appearance and manageability.

Items you’ll need

  • Moisturizing conditioner
  • Oil
  • Shampoo
  • Comb
  • Shower cap
  • Deep conditioner
  • Hair dryer
  • Heat Protectant
  • Brush
  • Scarf
  • Flat iron

The following quick and easy steps will help you bring your wigs to life no matter how tired and worn out they look.

Step #1: The prewashing

Generously apply a natural oil, such as virgin olive oil, coconut oil or grape-seed oil or coconut oil as a conditioning treatment. Ensure you cover all the strands from end to end. A moisturizing conditioner is also a great alternative. Let the oil or conditioner sit for about 30 minutes. To make this step even more efficient, cover the hair with a shower cap.

Step #2: Wash

Use a moisturizing shampoo to thoroughly wash the hair. Ensure the scalp between tracks is cleaned by running your fingers through it. Rinse thoroughly.

Step #3: Moisturize

Apply a generous amount of moisturizing conditioner on the hair strands, from the scalp all the way to the tips. Be sure to apply some extra conditioner on its ends because this is where all the breakage occurs. Let the conditioner sit for at least five minutes then thoroughly rinse it out. Use your fingers to squeeze out excess water and untangle.

Gently comb your wig and let it dry for about 20 minutes. At this point, you can apply a moisturizing product and ensure the ends are fully covered. It is also advisable to apply a heat protectant at this stage, to protect your wig hair from damage, especially if you intend to heat style it.

Step #5: Allow your wig to dry

You can either blow dry or allow your wig to air dry. Should you choose to go with blow drying, set you’re your tool on its lowest temperature so that the heat damage is significantly reduced. Follow through with a hairbrush so that the strands are fully straightened.

For curls, you can use a flat iron or curling iron to achieve them. Work from the front towards the back until you complete the entire head. You can as well leave it at the blow-dried stage if you wish to wear a straight style.

Step #6: When going to bed

Ensure your hair is wrapped in a satin bonnet or scarf before going to bed. This protects your hair from drying up especially if you sleep on cotton pillowcases. You can choose to have satin pillowcases as well if you don’t fancy head wraps.

Human hair wigs can only last longer ta synthetic wigs only if well taken care of. Proper care and sufficient attention should have your wigs looking as new as at the time you bought them.

Proper care for your human hair wig?

  • When washing and conditioning,
  • Use cool to look warm water to rinse out the products.
  • Avoid applying the product directly to the wig scalp, just as you wouldn’t apply on your real scalp.
  • Gently comb the shampoo through the strands of your wig hair to ensure even distribution. Avoid rubbing the hair.
  • When botting out water from the wet hair, do it gently.

How do you prevent entanglement of your human hair wig?

Occasionally, the nape area may be entangled because this is where the wig experiences a lot of friction. This is totally normal.

To prevent tangles, gently brush your wig after applying a drop of oil before wearing it. You’re better off working towards maintaining a healthy state of your wig on a daily basis than waiting till when the situation gets out of hand. Remember, your wig needs the same attention and care you would give your natural hair, if not more. This is simply because the strands on your wig hardly receive any oils from your scalp.
