UMANG App Guide: How to Register, Login and Use Major Services
Deepak from Lucknow wanted to check his EPF balance. He tried the EPFO website — it threw a gateway error. He tried the EPFO member portal — his UAN login wasn’t working. Then someone told him about the UMANG app. He downloaded it, registered in 3 minutes, pulled up his complete PF passbook, and even checked his claim status. All from the same app he later used to book a gas cylinder refill. That’s the thing about UMANG — once you figure it out, you wonder why you were juggling five different government websites. This UMANG app guide walks you through registration, login, and the services that actually matter.
What UMANG Is — The Short Version
UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) is a single app that bundles services from over 200 central and state government departments. Think of it as a sarkari super-app (ek hi app, sab kuch). Built by the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) and the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), it gives you access to EPFO, DigiLocker, Aadhaar services, PAN, Passport Seva, gas booking, bill payments, pension services, and much more — all without downloading separate apps for each department.
The app is available on Android, iOS, and also has a web version at https://web.umang.gov.in. It supports 23 Indian languages.
What You Need Before You Start
Registration is minimal:
- An Indian mobile number — this becomes your UMANG login ID
- A working internet connection — Wi-Fi or mobile data
- The UMANG app itself — download from Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS). Search for “UMANG” published by the Ministry of Electronics & IT, Government of India
No Aadhaar is required for basic registration, No fees and No documents to upload at the registration stage.
However — and this is where people get tripped up — individual services within UMANG have their own authentication requirements. For example, checking your EPF passbook requires your UAN and OTP from your EPFO-registered mobile. Accessing DigiLocker documents needs your Aadhaar-linked number. The UMANG registration just gets you into the app. Each service inside it has its own door.
How to Register on the UMANG App
The process is nearly identical on Android and iOS. Here are the exact steps:
- Download and install the UMANG app from the Play Store or App Store
- Open the app and select your preferred language — the app supports Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia, Assamese, and Urdu, among others
- Tap “Register” (on the welcome screen, you’ll see Login and Register options)
- Enter your mobile number and tap “Get OTP”
- Enter the OTP sent to your number
- Create a 4-to-6-digit MPIN — this is your secure PIN for future logins. Remember it. Write it down if you have to.
- Confirm your MPIN — and you’re registered
The whole process takes about 2–3 minutes. After registration, you’ll land on the UMANG home screen, which shows categories like Trending, Top Rated, Recently Viewed, and service tiles for popular departments.
Quick tip from experience: create your MPIN carefully. If you set it and forget it, you’ll have to reset it via OTP every time you log in, which defeats the purpose of having a PIN. Pick something you use elsewhere — but not 1234, please.
How to Log In to UMANG
You have three login options:
- Mobile number + MPIN — fastest, recommended for daily use
- Mobile number + OTP — works if you’ve forgotten your MPIN
- Social media login (Google, Facebook) — only if you’ve linked these accounts in your profile settings
The login screen is straightforward. Enter your registered mobile number, then either your MPIN or request an OTP. After verification, you’re on the dashboard.
Can you use UMANG on a computer? Yes — https://web.umang.gov.in works on desktop browsers. The web version has the same services, though honestly, the mobile app is smoother. The web version sometimes loads slowly and doesn’t render well on older browsers. Use Chrome if you’re going the web route.
Major Services Worth Using — And How to Access Them
UMANG lists thousands of services, but realistically, most people use it for five or six things. Here are the ones that actually work well and save you trips to government offices.
EPFO / PF Services
This is the reason most people download UMANG. Here’s what you can do:
- View PF Passbook — search for “EPFO” on the dashboard → select “Employee Centric Services” → “View Passbook” → enter your UAN → verify OTP from your EPFO-registered mobile → your complete passbook with employer contributions, employee contributions, and interest appears
- Check Claim Status — same path, select “Track Claim Status” → enter UAN → see where your withdrawal or transfer request stands
- Raise a Claim — yes, you can initiate PF withdrawal directly from UMANG. Enter UAN, verify OTP, select claim type (advance, final settlement, pension withdrawal), and submit
- Know Your UAN — if you don’t know your UAN, the app can retrieve it using your Aadhaar, PAN, or member ID
Nandini from Bengaluru switched jobs and needed to transfer her PF. Instead of visiting the EPFO office, she raised the transfer claim on UMANG. The claim was processed in 11 days and reflected in her new account’s passbook. She tracked every stage — from “claim submitted” to “settled” — on the same app.
DigiLocker
UMANG integrates with DigiLocker, so you can access your stored documents without switching apps. Search for “DigiLocker” in UMANG, authenticate with your Aadhaar-linked number and OTP, and your issued documents (DL, PAN, Aadhaar, marksheets) are accessible right there.
This is particularly useful at airports, police checkpoints, or bank visits where you need to show a document quickly.
Aadhaar Services
Through the “My Aadhaar” integration on UMANG, you can:
- Download e-Aadhaar
- Check Aadhaar authentication history
- Lock/unlock biometrics
- Generate Virtual ID (VID)
- Locate the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre
Each action requires Aadhaar OTP verification. The interface mirrors what you’d see on the MyAadhaar portal, but within the UMANG app.
PAN Services
UMANG lets you apply for a new PAN card, apply for corrections/changes, and track application status — all routed through NSDL/UTIITSL. Search “PAN” on the dashboard. You can also check your CIBIL score for free through the CIBIL integration on UMANG (UMANG app se kaun kaun si services milti hai — PAN aur CIBIL dono mil jata hai).
Gas Booking (LPG)
One of UMANG’s surprisingly useful features. You can book gas cylinder refills for HP Gas, Bharat Gas, and Indane Gas. Select the gas provider, enter your registered mobile or LPG ID, and book. Subsidies and delivery tracking are also available here.
Passport Seva
You can’t apply for a new passport through UMANG directly — that still requires the Passport Seva portal at https://www.passportindia.gov.in. But you can use UMANG to check application status, locate passport centres, calculate fees, and check appointment availability.
Utility Bill Payments
Electricity, water, broadband, landline — bill payments for multiple state utilities are available. Payments go through the PayGov gateway integrated within UMANG.
Fees and Timeline
App download: Free Registration: Free Most services: Free to access (bill payments and certain applications may have their own fees, charged by the respective department — not by UMANG)
Customer support: Available 8 AM to 8 PM, all days. Call 10505 or email customercare@umang.gov.in for issues.
Service processing times depend entirely on the department behind the service. EPFO claims typically take 10–20 days. Aadhaar updates take 48–72 hours. UMANG itself is just the interface — processing happens at the backend of each department.
How to Track Status of Requests
For most services that involve applications or claims (EPFO, Passport, PAN), UMANG provides built-in tracking. The path is usually:
- Open the relevant service (e.g., EPFO → Employee Centric → Track Claim)
- Enter your reference number or UAN
- Verify via OTP if required
- The current status displays on screen
For Passport Seva, enter your file number to check status. For PAN applications, use the acknowledgment number. Each service has its own tracking format, but the search-and-track pattern is consistent across the app.
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
❌ Creating MPIN and immediately forgetting it → ✅ Write it down or store it in your phone’s password manager. You’ll need it every time you open the app. Resetting MPIN via OTP is possible but adds unnecessary friction.
❌ Expecting EPFO services to work with any mobile number → ✅ EPFO OTP goes to the number registered with your UAN, not your UMANG-registered number. These can be different. Make sure you know which number is linked to your UAN before attempting PF services.
❌ Downloading a fake “UMANG” app → ✅ Multiple clones exist on the Play Store. The real app is published by “Ministry of Electronics & IT, Government of India” — check the developer name before installing.
❌ App crashing or showing blank screen on older phones → ✅ UMANG requires a reasonably updated OS. On Android, version 5.0+ is needed. If the app keeps crashing, clear the app cache (Settings → Apps → UMANG → Clear Cache) and update to the latest version.
❌ Trying to access DigiLocker without Aadhaar linking → ✅ DigiLocker services within UMANG require your DigiLocker account to be linked with Aadhaar. If you haven’t done this, the service will either fail silently or redirect you to DigiLocker’s signup. Set up your DigiLocker account with Aadhaar first at https://www.digilocker.gov.in — then access it through UMANG.
❌ Not updating the app for months → ✅ UMANG gets frequent updates. If a service that used to work suddenly stops, check if you’re on the latest version. Old versions sometimes lose access to updated APIs from departments like EPFO or UIDAI.
❌ Assuming UMANG replaces the original portal entirely → ✅ UMANG is an aggregator, not a replacement. For some complex actions — like filing a new passport application, or detailed ITR filing — you’ll still need to visit the department’s own portal. UMANG is best for quick checks, status tracking, and simple transactions.
What Nobody Tells You
Here’s something I wish UMANG made clearer: each service within UMANG authenticates independently. Your UMANG login (mobile + MPIN) gets you into the app, but accessing EPFO needs your UAN + OTP, accessing DigiLocker needs Aadhaar + OTP, and accessing NPS needs your PRAN + password. It’s not single sign-on — it’s more like a mall with many shops, each with its own entry pass. So before you open a service, have the relevant credentials ready. Sitting on a bus trying to recall your UAN while the OTP timer is counting down is not fun.
Also: you can use UMANG even if you’re abroad. The international version of the app is available in countries like the USA, UK, UAE, Canada, Singapore, and Australia. NRIs can check their EPF balance, access DigiLocker, and use Aadhaar services from overseas — as long as they have their Indian mobile number active for OTPs.
Suresh, who moved to Dubai for work, used UMANG to check his PF balance and download his e-Aadhaar when his employer asked for identity documents. He didn’t need to call anyone back in India or visit any office. The whole thing took him four minutes on his phone during a lunch break.
