Why was Charlie Sheen returned from the series “My uncle Charlie” whose main role he played?
Almost fifteen years after the facts, it is one of the most significant media soap operas on American television. In 2011, CBS announced that it had ended the Charlie Sheen contract, the main actor of the my uncle Charlie series. The program, however, brought together excellent audiences every week, but the toxic behavior of his star did not leave the choice of the channel.
From movie star to television star
Revealed in the 80s thanks in particular to Platoon and Wall Street, Charlie Sheen then revealed his comic talent thanks to the two parody films Hot Shots. However, his career knew around the mid -90s of first turmoil, due to his excesses of alcohol and drugs. Little by little, here it is relegated to second -plan productions.
The early 2000s, however, offered him the opportunity to come back to the front of the stage, but on television. It is indeed chosen to succeed Michael J. Fox in the main role of the sitcom Spin City. Despite an inevitable comparison with his predecessor, Charlie Sheen is doing with the honors and his performance earned him to be coveted for the main role of another series: my uncle Charlie.
The first years take place perfectly. Charlie Sheen negotiates a cachet of more than $ 800,000 per episode then raised to 1.2 million, the biggest salary ever received for a television player. The hearings are there, and the seasons are linked. But the success of the program will gradually awaken the demons of the American actor.
An inevitable referral after a series of controversies
His consumption of narcotics impacts working conditions on the set of the series. Charlie Sheen also makes the headlines for his personal setbacks and arrests for domestic violence and intoxicated state. The American actor also holds conspiratorial comments in the media, and anti -Semites against the creator of my uncle Charlie Chuck Lorre.
A violent argument with the latter on the set of the series therefore pushes the CBS channel to make the decision to send it back. The production quickly announces the name of his successor, Ashton Kutscher, but in a different role. Because the character embodied by Charlie Sheen was offered an ending which speaks volumes about the state of mind of production against him: he dies crushed by a piano with tail on the step of his front door.
A happy outcome to this media soap opera
For many years, Chuck Lorre and Charlie Sheen settled their accounts by interposed media. But this media guéguerre recently ended, when the American screenwriter proposed to the actor to appear in his new Bookie series. The two men then evoked their reconciliation as unexpected as it is improbable.
“The hardest part for Chuck Lorre was the way everything collapsed because he really thought he was friends with Charlie”remembered Jon Cryer, the other star in the series, in an interview delivered in 2024. “Losing it was really very hard for him. But they reconciled and it's a beautiful thing.”
But unlike the scriptwriter, Jon Cryer does not yet seem ready to forgive everything in Charlie Sheen: “He has spoiled everything. So I tell myself that I love him, that I wish him the best and I hope he will live healthy for the rest of his life, but I don't know if I will rework with him one day.”
The twelve seasons of the my uncle Charlie series will no longer be available on Prime Video from June 30.
