iPhone update fixes troublesome bug that broke NFC features …

Apple’s latest iPhone update has addressed a troubling bug that caused Apple Pay and other NFC features to stop working on iPhone 15 handsets after charging the device using BMW’s in-car wireless charger.

Yes, this is a somewhat strange problem, and also irritating, especially considering that it can also affect the proper operation of BMW’s digital car key. But the good news is that Apple’s release of iOS 17.1.1 on Tuesday finally fixes this.

Apple launched the iPhone 15 in late September, so it took the company a while to sort this out. An internal memo released by the company in late October and seen by MacRumors said the issue occurred when charging the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max in some BMW and Toyota Supra vehicles.

The latest iPhone update also fixed an issue where the lock screen weather widget would show a file icon instead of snow.

Here are Apple’s notes accompanying the iOS 17.1.1 update for iPhone:

This update provides bug fixes for your iPhone including:
– In rare circumstances, Apple Pay and other NFC features may be unavailable on iPhone 15 models after wireless charging in some cars
– Weather lock screen widget may not display snow correctly

If updates for your iPhone are not delivered automatically, you will need to complete the process manually. This can be done by simply selecting Settings, then General, then Software Update. You will then see information about what the update brings. Finally, you can choose whether to update now or overnight.
