I installed Amazon’s $ 599 Ero Pro 6 trap Wi-Fi system a few days ago and have already seen a huge improvement in my Wi-Fi at home.
If you know you pay for fast internet, you can try net networking, but feel like your home is slow on Wi-Fi or there are areas of your home where you can watch movies or video chat Cannot stream Wi-Fi is important right now, with many people working or attending class in different rooms of the house.
Mesh networking, put it simply, place several wireless routers around your home so that they cover as much area as possible. It works better than cheaper Wi-Fi extender.
The new model from Amazon’s Ero supports the latest Wi-Fi 6 standards, so you can have more gadgets connected to Wi-Fi without much interference. It also has better antennas than the previous generation Eero 5, which I was using before setting up the Eero Pro 6.
Here you need to know about it.
Eero Pro 6, like other Eero products, is super easy to install. You simply plug a hub into a modem given by your cable company and then use an app to connect the other two to different parts of your home. It does all the legwork in the background, so you don’t have to worry about getting each unit to talk to each other. I set up the new system in about 10 minutes.
I pay for really fast, one-gigabit internet but, generally, I get Wi-Fi speeds that are about 90% slower than that. I live in an old house with plaster walls that really messes up the Wi-Fi signal, even in places that are only a few rooms away from my router.
The Ero Pro 6 has doubled or quadrupled my speeds around the house, increasing them from 100Mbps to 700Mbps, depending on the room I’m in. This means that I can now stream game services like Google Stadia in my living room. Where I couldn’t before, or download movies and applications very fast around the house. And that means enough speed for my wife and me to stream multiple videos at the same time.
I haven’t had any issues with dropped connections yet, as I sometimes did with the regular Eero 5 and its competitor Google Wi-Fi, as they didn’t have enough strength to cover my entire house. .
I don’t have kids old enough to use this feature, but Ero lets you manage different people in your home and block services. Therefore, your children may not be able to use FaceTime after a certain time, for example, or visit some websites that are inappropriate for you.
The regular Eero 6, which I have not tested, works similarly, but does not strengthen as an antenna or I support fast speeds to pay from my cable company. But if you live in a small house or do not pay gigabit internet then this can be a good alternative to the Pro model.
Ero Pro 6 is expensive. It is on sale for Black Friday for $ 479, but is priced at $ 599. This is more than double the cost of regular Ero 6. Therefore, buy it only when you pay for really fast internet (at least 500Mbps) and need to cover 6,000 square feet.
It is more geeky, but I also wish that an access point had more Ethernet ports. There are only two. If you are wired you will always get a fast connection. This is best for game consoles where you need the fastest possible connection, or for things that are constantly plugged into a smart-light hub or your work computer. I have an extra switch that I plug into the back of the Eero to solve this problem and to expand the number of Ethernet jacks, but it is some people who care about wired connections.
Sometimes your phone or tablet or laptop will connect to the farthest Eero hotspot. I asked Eero co-founder and CEO Nick Weaver about this during a quick phone call.
He explained that Eero does not decide which gadget it connects to and instead, it is a client device like your iPhone or tablet, which decides which hotspot to use. Sometimes, this device will be the farthest connected for whatever reason. But Weaver told me that you could turn on a feature called “band steering” that forces your gadget to use the 5GHz frequency, if available, it can help connect to the nearest hotspot . Another solution I have found: Turn off your Wi-Fi and turn it back on again. But Weaver warns to do this, so that often a device can be blacklisted with Wi-Fi and you will have to enter your password again.
The gamer and other computer enthusiasts who care about the specific quality of service, or QoS, settings they will not find here yet. They give you priority over some devices, such as game consoles or PCs, over others. But, Weaver told me that sometimes people forget that they have a game console using all the speed of the network and then wonder why other gadgets are running slowly. Therefore, instead, it cleverly manages it in the background. But Eero is testing a feature that gives more control to optimize video conferencing and gaming. Anyway, I play a lot of games and have no problem with how Ero works, so it’s not a big deal for me.
Finally, Eero sells subscription services with additional security features. If you subscribe for a full year, there are packages of $ 2.99 per month or $ 9.99 per month with discounts, and they provide extras such as password management and ad blocking. This is another way that Amazon is making money from the product. It doesn’t bother me too much because I don’t pay for them and don’t need them, but I’ve heard from some people who say they have seen notifications on their phones to subscribe. If you don’t need them, dismiss them.
Should you buy it
Yes, if you are really paying for expensive home internet and you are not getting the expected speed over Wi-Fi, then you should consider a mesh networking system like Ero Pro. 6. I’ve been a big fan of Ero’s products over the years and like the latest update, which fixed a lot of coverage problems that I had with the previous generation of regular Ero 5’s.
But it’s expensive, and if you don’t pay for really fast internet, don’t have coverage problems or need to cover a lot of space with Wi-Fi, you don’t need it.
