The hero, embodied by Tom Selleck and his famous mustache, made the heyday of the American channel CBS. The hero is called Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He served as Navy Seal before becoming a lieutenant at the Office of Naval Intelligence. Today, he ensures the safety of a luxurious property located in Oahu, in the Hawaii archipelago, belonging to Robin Masters, famous author of detective novels.
Following a lost bet, the latter granted Magnum the use of his friends house as well as his Ferrari 308 GTS, provided that he monitors his home. Magnum shares the place with Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, a strict British butler and former army officer of the Indies. Their cohabitation is often hectic.

Higgins hardly tolerates the relaxed attitude of Magnum, and does not miss an opportunity to complicate his life using his two Dobermans, Zeus and Apollo. However, over time, a form of mutual respect ends up setting up with each other.
Having become a private detective, (hence the PI (Private Investigator) in the original title) Magnum conducts its surveys with the help of two longtime friends, also veterans of Vietnam. Terry, helicopter pilot converted into tourism, and Rick, manager of the upscale club by the sea, King Kamehameha, regularly lend him a hand in his adventures.
Note that the hero's full first name is revealed in the final episode of the series, entitled “Resolutions” (season 8, episode 12). In this episode, a memorial in honor of his father, Thomas Sullivan Magnum III, is presented, thus establishing that the full name of Magnum: Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV.
Previously, the first name “Thomas” had been mentioned in the episode “The mirror of the soul” (season 3, episode 7), but his full name was not specified.
