Released in 2020, The Old Guard had already won over a large audience with its cocktail of intense action and questions about immortality. The story of Andromache de Scythie, alias Andy (Charlize Theron), and his group of immortal warriors had found an echo with spectators, then just deconfined, eager for different, darker and more human superhero stories. But it seems that, five years later, the wait for the imminent arrival of the continuation relives the flame of the first film!
Less than 24 hours from the release of The Old Guard 2, it is a surprise return: the original film rises in 5th place in the top 10 of the most seen films on Netflix in France at a time when we write these lines! A sign that does not deceive: the craze for this universe is stronger than ever. One wonders what motivates this renewed interest. Simple curiosity effect before discovering the new chapter? Recall bite after five long years? Nostalgia for a film that marked its time? Anyway, success is undeniable.
A truly solid casting
The participation of Charlize Theron in the role of Andy is undoubtedly not unrelated. His charisma and performance had greatly contributed to the success of the first film. But beyond the actress, it is a whole universe that changes compared to the traditional superheroes: endearing characters but also with their dark face, well-carried out combat scenes, tackled themes that give a little to think … So many elements that make The Old Guard a film that finally left its footprint in the landscape of Netflix productions.
