On June 21, this film by Mr. Night Shyamalan leaves Netflix. The opportunity to review or review this fantastic blockbuster that tarnishes the director's filmography.
Before Netflix rehabilitates the cartoon of Nickelodeon, Mr. Night Shyamalan attacked the history of Aang, the last air master. A live action version which was to be the first part of a large budget trilogy. Far from having marked the spirits when it was released, the feature film is what can today be described as an industrial disaster. We explain why.
A family film that does not fly
Mr. Night Shyamalan is the kind of director who loves stories featuring young heroes with extraordinary powers. Like Aang, a young air master chosen to become the avatar, a being capable of controlling all the elements and ensuring peace on earth. In 2010, when the Live Action was released on our screens, the director wishes to shoot more family films.
The filmmaker enjoys a comfortable budget: $ 150 million, used in part for special effects and the construction of the sets: “As soon as we started shooting in Groënland. When we set foot in the middle of a reconstituted village and I saw all my actors with their armor, their helmets … I had a shock and I understood that it was my most ambitious film I was shooting.”
Unfortunately, the project quickly turned to vinegar, even before the film was released in the cinema. Cala was played as soon as the actors were chosen. Paramount studios and the filmmaker were accused of Whitewashing After having white actors to play Asian characters. Like the young Noah Ringer in the role of Aang or Nicola Peltz in that of Katara. Only Dev Patel got out with honors.
An aspect that has been corrected in the Netflix series whose casting is 100% Asian. One of the talents – Paul Sun -Hyung Lee) who lends his features to General Iroh – will not hesitate to descend the film of Shyamalan in front of the press:
“The choice of actors did not suit me, it was even injuring, on the one hand. Not that they were bad, far from it. No one wants to make a bad adaptation or to offend fans, but decisions were made and they were not the right ones”.
Less shyamalan paws
When we look at the last air master, it is hard to find Shyamalan's cinema (even if it does, as usual, a cameo). The director has, over his career, served films over his career with twists that rebuild the cards. As in sixth sense, The Visit, or Split.
He has used us so much to surprise us that the films that do not have twists are ultimately the least loved as the last air master, after Earth or phenomena.
With a note of 1.9 out of 5 for 1500 criticisms, the live-action is to date the worst film of its filmography. Faced with this outcry, Paramount cuts the tap: the trilogy project falls into the water and Aang can return Hiberner a few more years …
The last air master leaves Netflix on June 14.
