Four months after his arrival with a fanfare on Prime Video, this action film taken from a true story on a car enthusiast will soon leave the catalog.
Gran Turismo is one of the best -selling video game sagas in the world, which has rained both car enthusiasts and neophytes. In 2023 Sony tackled this famous franchise by the prism of a true story: that of the British Jann Mardenborough (embodied by Archie Madekwe).
This fan of Gran Turismo has reached, thanks to his skills in this car racing simulator, to become a real professional pilot. He participated in the GP3 Series, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Japanese Super GT series. Accompanied by an ex-missed racing and an idealistic framework of the motor sport industry, they risk everything and attack the most elitist sport in the world.
The realization of the “biopic” was entrusted to the technician Neill Blomkamp who had only one obsession in mind: filming as close as possible to the action. And if we believe the note allocated by the spectators on Allociné – of 4 out of 5 – and the glowing comments on his page, it's a successful mission:
“Gran Turismo is not a film. It is a fully immersive experience, of a sensational power. This incredible true story takes us to the guts thanks to an implacable montage, of a rhythm that makes us twirl. A jubilant and inspiring viewing!” (Wienna)
“To see absolutely! Even without being a big gamer, I was captivated by the film. The races are so well filmed that you feel the speed and the pressure that the pilots undergo”. (Ikky_phoenix)
“It's well punctuated and Neill Blomkamp's camera follows to the millimeter and in all situations, these cars on mythical circuits, around the world. No big surprise, of course, but it's well done for all the crazy steering wheel and their passengers of course.” (Mr Cinetok)
“Difficult not to dive head down in this deluge of ultra -strong sensations and emotions at full speed. Tel Gun Maverick, there is enough to be caught up in the power of machines and images.” (Pfloyd1)
An unrivaled technical feat?
For the sake of realism and also because the means were there, the teams could turn on the most beautiful circuits in the world. But it was also necessary to find those who would lead racing cars. The vehicles were led by experienced stuntmen, supervised by the real Jann Mardenborough, who also provided the Cascade D’Archie Madekwe lining.

“Some are authentic active racing pilots, others are cascading drivers who have been in the business for over 40 years. I think, for these people, the prospect of piloting real racing cars out of six real competition circuits was really too good for them to let it go”, said Matt Hirsch, a delegate producer, said at the time.

But the most technical part was to turn as close as possible to the action and when we talk about cars launched at more than 100 km/h, the difficulty is its paroxism. Neill Blomkamp and his teams had to dismantle a vehicle and rebuild it by placing the cameras.
The technicians thus created a fitted designer car: the controllers have been modified to be able to operate by activating orders placed on the roof of the vehicle, from which a stuntman was driving. Even if it is trained for more than a year on a simulator, Archie Madekwe does not really lead to the screen. If we see him handling the steering wheel, the gear lever and the pedals, they are actually … all dummy.
Gran Turismo leaves Prime Video on June 8.
