The Olympics delivered a first full day of action at Paris 2024 and day two promises plenty more thrills and spills.
Simone Biles made her highly-anticipated return in the women’s gymnastics after experiencing ‘the twisties’ at the Tokyo Games, delivering a stunning and historic routine in qualifying while also sparking injury concerns after she was seen limping and wearing strapping on her left leg.
Later, it could be a historic day in the pool, with Adam Peaty cruising into the final of the men’s 100m breaststroke in his bid to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals. French phenom Leon Marchand is safely through in the men’s 400m IM, with Team GB’s Max Litchfield qualifying in second at La Defense Arena.
Elsewhere, Andy Murray could play the final match of his career alongside Dan Evans in the men’s doubles, while Rafael Nadal will be looking to set up a sensational match with Novak Djokovic in the singles. USA’s basketball team, including LeBron James, also get their title defence underway.
But the water quality of the Seine continues to cause havoc for the triathlon, with practice scrapped on Sunday due to pollution after heavy rain in the city. Follow all the action, latest results and medals from Paris 2024 in our live blog below:
Olympics 2024: Nadal starts against Fucsovics in men’s singles tennis
There had been concern he would withdraw, then we’ve had a long old wait for the match to actually start – but Rafa Nadal, the king of clay, is here at Roland Garros and in action against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.
The Spaniard duly won the first point to enormous cheers from the stands – but there’s no doubt he’s got his work cut out for him physically today after playing doules at the Games already.

Men’s tennis: Rafa Nadal set to start, Jack Draper wins
Jack Draper has won his first-round match against Japanese opponent Kei Nishikori, 6-1 6-4 on Court 12 in the men’s singles tennis.
And right now, fellow Team GB member Dan Evans is also winning, 6-2 in the first set and currently 4-5 in the second against Moez Echargui of Tunisia.
But Evans has also taken a fall and hurt both knee and wrist by the looks of things and has needed some treatment before continuing.
Evans is due to play doubles with Andy Murray in the Scot’s last event of his career.

Olympics 2024: Women’s cross country mountain biking
There’s now just a single rider within two minutes of Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, Puck Pieterse 90 seconds behind and out of the saddle as she tries to shave some of those seconds away. The prospect of two French medals seems to have gone after Loana Lecomte crashed heavily in a worrying incident. It looked a nasty one for the 24-year-old, whose race appears to be over.

GB women’s hockey suffer defeat to Spain
No further scoring in the fourth quarter despite plenty of pressure from Team GB and a very late penalty corner – the women suffer a 2-1 loss to Spain in their opening pool match.
Tomorrow GB will play Australia, followed by South Africa on 31 July and USA on 1 August and Argentina on 3 August.
The quarter-finals start from 5 August, with the gold medal match for the women on the 9th.

Nigerian athlete returns positive test for banned substance
A statement from the International Testing Agency (ITA) says Nigerian athlete Cynthia Temitayo Ogunsemilore has returned a positive test for a banned substance and has been provisionally suspended as a result.
That follows Iraqi judoka Sajjad Sehen and Dominican volleyball player Lisvel Eve Mejia also returning failed tests at the Games this summer.
The ITA asserts an apparent anti-doping rule violation against Nigerian athlete Cynthia Temitayo Ogunsemilore.
The ITA reports a sample collected from boxer Cynthia Temitayo Ogunsemilore has returned an adverse analytical finding for the specified prohibited substance Furosemide (classified as S5. diuretics and masking agents according to the prohibited list of the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).
The sample was collected by the ITA under the testing authority and results management authority of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during an out-of-competition anti-doping control on 25 July 2024 in Paris, France. The result was reported by the WADA-accredited laboratory of Paris on 27 July 2024.
The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended until the resolution of the matter in line with the World Anti-Doping Code and the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This means that the athlete is prevented from competing, training, coaching, or participating in any activity, during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The athlete has the right to challenge the imposition of the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport – Anti-Doping Division (CAS ADD).
The athlete also has the right to request the analysis of the B-sample.

Olympics 2024: Women’s cross country mountain biking
Chants of “Pauline, Pauline, Pauline” as the home fans roar the leader on as she flies through lap three of seven. That gap is widening – it’s now pretty much a minute back to Puck Pieterse, who is trying gamely to close but not making any inroads.
Still plenty of time left for incident, accident or fatigue to strike, but this has been outstanding so far.

Olympics 2024: GB Women trail Spain in hockey
A couple of penalty corner chances for Team GB haven’t quite led to an equaliser, as the Brits trail 2-1 to Spain in their pool stage game.
This is the first game for both nations, with Argentina, Australia, South Africa and USA also all in Pool B.
It’s the end of the third quarter now so not too much time for GB to get back into the match but they are far from out of it. 15 minutes to play.

Olympics 2024: Women’s cross country mountain biking
Puck Pieterse and Loana Lecomte now trail Pauline Ferrand-Prevot by 30 seconds. It’s an early, full-blooded move from the Frenchwoman, though she does tend to be able to sustain her effort. Stamina will be key, though there are French flags everywhere to encourage her on.

Olympics 2024: Women’s cross country mountain biking
Away goes Ferrand-Prevot, pushing power through the pedals as she surges free at the front. This is a course that really suits her with long stretches through which she can move through the gears and make use of her huge engine. She’s put ten seconds into her rivals already.

Olympics 2024: Women’s cross country mountain biking
A lead quartet have separated themselves from the rest, Pauline Ferrand-Prevot with teammate Loana Lecomte for company along with Puck Pieterse of the Netherlands and Austria’s Laura Stigger. It was a French one-two at the Worlds in Glasgow last year as Ferrand-Prevot secured a fourth title in five years.
