Fans of S.W.A.T. were hit with mixed emotions this week: while CBS has officially cancelled the long-running police procedural, it also confirmed a new spin-off series titled S.W.A.T. Exiles — with Shemar Moore returning as the iconic Hondo. But in a controversial twist, none of Moore’s former castmates will be joining him.
S.W.A.T. Lives On — In a New Form
S.W.A.T. Exiles will follow Hondo as he comes out of retirement to lead a last-chance, high-risk experimental S.W.A.T. unit made up of unpredictable rookie officers. The series promises a fresh start with a new cast, a new team dynamic, and, of course, Hondo at the helm.
Shemar Moore expressed excitement about the new chapter, saying:
“My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. were epic and unforgettable. We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from cancellation twice, and continued to win over fans and families across the globe.”
But Where’s the Rest of the Team?
Despite the good news for Moore and the franchise, some fans are less thrilled that the original ensemble won’t return. Addressing concerns in a video posted to Instagram, Shemar Moore responded directly to the backlash.
“Nobody likes change, but without change, you can’t grow,” Moore said.
“This isn’t arrogance. It’s not ego. It’s just the truth. I’m the team leader. I’m Shemar Moore, a.k.a. Hondo.”
He acknowledged the contributions of his former castmates:
“I had a team — a strong team, a family. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t say loud and clear, to them and the world, that I love them, respect them, and admire them. They’re family for life.”
No Apologies for What’s Next
Moore made it clear he won’t be apologizing for moving forward:
“I’m not going to apologize. I’ve been busting my a** for 31 years to do what I do, and I’m beyond excited for the future. I’m just happy S.W.A.T. gets to stay in the game.”

While the departure of the original cast may sting, S.W.A.T. Exiles could offer a bold new direction for the franchise. With Moore’s passion, leadership, and action-star charisma front and center, there’s every reason to believe the rebooted series will keep fans on the edge of their seats.
