Simple Future Tense: Verbs are words that refer to actions or states of action. In English Grammar, verbs are used in a variety of verb tenses. The tense of a verb, generally speaking, tells us at what period in time an action or state is happening. The verb tense which denotes the time of action happening in the future times is referred to as Future Tense. The General rule used is Subject + Helping verb (will) + base form of the verb + the rest of the sentence. This tense is also called Future Indefinite tense.

Simple Future(Indefinite) Tense

According to the Oxford Learner’s Dictionarythe simple future tense is defined as “the form of a verb that expresses what will happen in future times.”

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionarythe simple future tense is “a verb tense that is used to refer to the future.”

The Collins Dictionary defines simple future tense as “A tense of verbs used when the action or event described is to occur after the time of utterance”.

The Macmillan Dictionary defines the simple future tense as the tense that depicts actions or events “expected to exist or happen during the time following the present time.”

Structure of Sentences in Simple Future(Indefinite) Tense

Simple/Indefinite Future Tense is the verb tense that is used to state the action or events which has occurred in the past. Simple Past Tense sentences can be in three forms, is, Positive or Affirmative, Negative, and Interrogative sentences. Below is the structure of all three forms and examples to make you understand better.

Structure of Sentences in Affirmative/Positive Form

Contraction With Simple Future(Indefinite) Tense

Generally, when we use the Future Simple tense in Speaking, we often contract the Subject and Auxiliary Verb. Below are examples of the same-

Uses of Simple Future(Indefinite) Tense

  1. The Simple Future tense is used to talk about things which we cannot control, It expresses the future as fact.
  2. We use this tense to talk about what we think or believe will happen in the future.
  3. We use this tense when we decide to do something at the time of speaking.

2. We use this tense to talk about what we think or believe will happen in the future.

3. We use this tense when we decide to do something at the time of speaking.
