Super Mario Bros. The Movie’ Dominates Netflix: A Triumphant Comeback from the 1993 Flop

Released in theaters last year, “Super Mario Bros. The Movie” has largely made up for the disaster caused by the first adaptation of the famous mustachioed plumber in 1993. It is currently one of the most watched films on Netflix.

A year and a half after its theatrical release, Super Mario Bros. – The Movie, the highly anticipated adaptation of the famous video game license by the animation studio Illumination, is now available on Netflix, and this week is among the 10 most-watched feature films by the platform’s subscribers.

4,036 out of 5 stars

A real relief for fans, who had a hard time getting over the first live-action film dedicated to Nintendo’s mascot (still considered one of the worst duds in history since its release in 1993), this new Mario adventure on the big screen has largely managed to right the ship and convince the public.

The film has indeed enjoyed a very good average of 4,036 stars out of 5 from AlloCiné viewers, but also and above all an exceptional box office score: having collected 1.3 billion greenbacks worldwide, it is quite simply one of the greatest animation successes.

A fun and rhythmic adaptation

Highly effective and particularly well-paced, this one-hour and 32-minute animated roller coaster follows the adventures of Mario and Luigi, two brothers who dream of making a fortune by opening their own plumbing business. But while trying to fix a huge leak in the heart of the city, they venture along a mysterious green pipe that leads them straight to a fabulous new world.

As fun as the plumber’s adventures on console could be, intelligently adapted by the artists at Illumination (Nintendo consultants conscientiously kept a close eye on things), Super Mario Bros is therefore a real success that Netflix visitors are currently acclaiming in streaming.

Given the success of this first feature film, new adaptation projects linked to other Nintendo licenses should probably see the light of day soon. A new Mario adventure at the cinema is in any case already planned for April 1, 2026 (and this is not a joke)!
