Mario is standing in the first level, looking out at a vast sea of blue and green hills. Star-shaped trees with simple, windy leaves grow above it. Flower Kingdom feels more alive than some 3D games with the highest budgets.
This is only possible because of a multitude of tiny details. The levels don’t have hyper-detailed texture, but a vibrant color palette gives them a cartoony charm. A new snail has stuck with me, thanks to the vibrant pink shell which contrasts its green sticky body. Pop art splashes can make all the difference. Mario’s ground-pounding is highlighted with a flash of white and yellow to give it more impact. It is also accentuated by the sound from the snare.
Animation has been re-invented to make everything work together. Wow This is the most expressive Mario 2D and 3D game ever, thanks to its tiny details. A GameExplain video shows it all in action.
