Swim Through The New Underwater Museum Off The Coast Of Florida!

Grayton Beach on the Florida Gulf Coast has opened an underwater museum and it looks absolutely natural, straight out of an ancient civilization. A joint venture of the Cultural Arts Coalition of Walton County and the South Walton Artificial Reef Association, the underwater museum spans 1/3 of a mile across the ocean floor. All the interesting art on display is commissioned sculptures that create a great attraction. The museum opened to the public on June 25, but one must be a certified diver or snorkeler to access it.

Some of the highlights of the Underwater Sculpture Museum are:

• The museum includes Vince Tatum’s skull.
• It is located less than a mile from the Grayton Beach coastal area – a famous beach in South Walton.
• In the first phase of work, seven sculptures were created by the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County, including a tribute to Jacques Cousteau’s ‘Aqualung’. It was designed in collaboration with students from a local Montessori school.
• Artificial reefs create natural homes for fish and anchorages for aquatic plants.
• The sculptures are attached to a “grouper box”. Which allows it to be carefully lowered underwater and thus fitted as a modular artificial reef.
• The underwater sculptures of Cancún grace the museum.
• The water around the sculpture installations is approximately 50-60 feet deep.
• Great opportunities for paddleboarders, kayakers and snorkelers, who will also benefit from the dense growth of marine life in the area.
• This museum is a first for the United States, while there are other popular exo underwater museums in the world – Mexico’s Museo Subacuático de Arte and Museo Atlántico, Canary Islands.
