However, later in the demo, it was clear that the miner was in recovery again, so the player took him off these drugs. Unfortunately, this decision angered him and he eventually cut off his hand to ease the pain while the player was on a resource gathering mission.

It was a heartbreaking but clear example of how these alters are real people too, and it’s extremely important to balance your relationships with them and their emotions. Getting the appropriate emotional response is not so easy because it is a reservoir of resources. However, these changes can be helpful, as these are different versions of Jan with different skill sets and life experiences. Sometimes, players will need to create a new one to resolve certain situations.

Later in the demo, Jan needed to talk to his ex-wife, but he knew he couldn’t deal with her emotionally. To make sure the conversation went better, he created another version of himself who never got divorced and became a botanist.
