In A Perfect Getaway, newlyweds Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney Anderson (Milla Jovovich) take a trip to Hawaii to celebrate their honeymoon. However, they are unnerved by reports that a couple has been murdered by an unknown man and a woman. The Andersons soon question whether Nick (Timothy Olyphant) and Gina (Kiele Sanchez) may be the killers. Kale (Chris Hemsworth) and Cleo (Marley Shelton) are also identified as potential threats. But the real murderers aren’t as obvious as the viewer may think. And it’s going to be a battle for survival in paradise.

Batman Begins (2005)

Director Christopher Nolan’s first movie in his Dark Knight trilogy streamlined Batman’s origin and gave movie fans a truly modern superhero. Christian Bale headlines Batman Begins as Bruce Wayne, a young man who is emotionally scarred by the murder of his parents. Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson) offers Bruce a sense of purpose among Ra’s al Ghul’s League of Shadows. However, Bruce rejects their brutal methods and adopts his own methodology as Batman. Years later, the League of Shadows returns, and Bruce’s biggest mistake comes back to haunt him. In order to save Gotham, Bruce is going to have to trust his childhood friend, Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes), and his new ally, James Gordon (Gary Oldman).

Fargo (1996)

Fargo is such an unusual movie that it still stands out 25 years after it was released. Frances McDormand won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Marge Gunderson, an unassuming police chief who finds herself investigating a murder and kidnap plot. Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) just wanted to temporarily kidnap his wife, Jean (Kristin Rudrüd), to get a ransom from his wealthy father-in-law. Unfortunately, the kidnappers, Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare), are so sloppy that they can’t stop leaving dead bodies in their wake.

The Iron Giant (1999)

Before leaving Warner Bros. for Pixar, writer and director Brad Bird delivered The Iron Giant, one of the greatest animated movies ever made. In the ‘50s, a young boy named Hogarth (Eli Marienthal) finds and befriends a large alien robot. The Giant (Vin Diesel) can’t remember who he is, but there are some horrific flashes of his previous life as a merciless weapon. While Hogarth and the Giant discover an ally in local beatnik, Dean McCoppin (Harry Connick Jr.), they also find themselves facing the scrutiny of FBI Agent Kent Mansley (Christopher McDonald). This movie has a lot of heart, especially within the chest of the Giant himself. When he chooses who he wants to be, it’s truly powerful.

Predator (1987)

There have been a handful of Predator sequels, but nothing beats the original. It’s among the pinnacle of ‘80s action flicks, thanks to a cast headlined by Arnold Schwarzenegger as Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer. Dutch and his team, including Blain Cooper (Jesse Ventura) and Billy Sole (Sonny Landham), are given a mission by CIA operative Al Dillon (Carl Weathers) that takes them deep into the untamed territory of South America. What they find is more than just a Soviet threat. It’s an alien from another world who is expertly hunting them down. But there can only be one apex predator in the jungle.

RoboCop (1987)

Many fans enjoy RoboCop as an action film, but few appreciate it for the touches of sublime satire … especially when we see the TV ads from the future. Officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is one of the few honest members of the police in Detroit. However, Alex’s subsequent attack at the hands of Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) prematurely ends his life. The corrupt corporation, OCP, transforms Alex’s body into a cyborg and gives him a new name: RoboCop. In his new incarnation, Alex is unstoppable on the streets. But RoboCop still has a few memories of his first life, and he’s looking for some payback as well.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Slumdog Millionaire was 2008’s Oscar winner for Best Picture, in part for its compelling and unique story. In India, Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is one question away from winning India’s version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? game show. However, some believe that Jamal must be cheating. That’s one of the reasons why the film takes the time to establish how Jamal gained the knowledge he needed, while also giving him some personal stakes in the outcome beyond the monetary prize. It’s an uplifting tale of triumph, and we don’t get many of those anymore.

Something’s Gotta Give (1996)

It’s an unusual move to introduce the romantic leads of a movie when the guy is initially dating his love interest’s daughter. But that’s one of the reasons that Something’s Gotta Give works. We can totally believe Jack Nicholson as Harry Sanborn, a womanizer who routinely dates women half his age, like Marin Klein (Amanda Peet). When Marin’s mother, Erica Barry (Diane Keaton), meets Harry, the sparks are undeniable. However, getting past their personal baggage is going to take more effort.

Soul Food (1997)

In Soul Food, the extended family is held together by Josephine “Big Mama” Joseph (Irma P. Hall), the matriarch who goes out of her way to bring everyone together for her weekly Sunday dinners. Following Big Mama’s death, the family begins to unravel. Sisters Teri (Vanessa Williams) and Maxine (Vivica A. Fox) fight over money and old grievances, while affairs, lies, and misunderstandings threaten to tear the family’s bonds apart. Ahmad (Brandon Hammond), one of the youngest members of the family, hatches a scheme to get everyone back together. But can the family truly reconcile after so much bad blood has passed between them?

You can thank 28 Days Later for the zombie revival of the last two decades. It’s also one of the best modern zombie flicks, thanks to the way it reimagines zombies as more human-like creatures of pure rage. A bicycle messenger named Jim (Cillian Murphy) finds himself in this dangerous new world after emerging from a coma. Jim soon aligns with survivors Selena (Naomie Harris), Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and Hannah (Megan Burns). The group becomes desperate to find safety and salvation. Unfortunately, their only offer for sanctuary means virtual slavery for the women. And neither Jim nor Selena will accept that outcome.
