“Titanic”, the masterpiece of James Cameron, remains a must in the cinema, but the final scene still arouses many questions. What should you really think?
The last minutes of Titanic brought us back in 1996, after an intense trip of more than three hours, where we were swept away by the moving history of an improbable love and the tragedy of the Titanic. Rose (Gloria Stuart), now elderly, finishes telling her experience on board the Keldych, a ship seeking to find the famous “heart of the ocean”, the diamond she wore during the sinking. Under the glow of the moon, alone on the bridge, Rose holds in her hand the jewel she had hidden for more than 80 years. With a mischievous smile, she throws the diamond in the ocean, allowing him to join the wreck of the Titanic, where it all started.
The following scene the watch peacefully elongated in her bed, a serene smile on the lips, surrounded by photos that testify to her many adventures. It is the memories of her life that she owes to Jack, who sacrificed herself for her.
A trip to the afterlife or a simple dream?
The cult film by James Cameron then invites us to follow the soul of Rose, or perhaps her mind, while she travels the corridors of the Titanic, now revived in its splendor of yesteryear. She goes under the big clock, a key place in the love story of Rose and Jack. There, she finds the latter, as well as all the other passengers who disappeared that fateful night from April 14 to 15, 1912.

The clock indicates precisely 2:20, the exact time of the sinking of the Titanic. In a symbolic decor where time seems suspended, Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) find themselves under the applause of the disappeared souls and kissing madly. The film ends thus, leaving many unanswered questions.

What does this end mean?
Since the film's release in 1997, this scene has generated multiple theories. Does Rose do she dream as she falls asleep after having released her burden symbolized by the diamond? His story to the Keldych crew would have rekindled his memories, and this return to the past would then be a creation of his subconscious, materializing in his sleep.
Or is it a vision of the beyond? After pushing her last breath, Rose could have accessed an eternal place, where time and death are abolished. This would then be the reason why the clock is stopped and why Rose appears 17 years old, as if she found her original form in the afterlife, with Jack and all the other disappeared passengers of the Titanic.
The interpretation of the end remains open, allowing everyone to get their own idea.
Titanic is to be reviewed, again and again, on Disney+.
