In 2014, 7 years before the northern bac phenomenon, Cédric Jimenez offered us an intense thriller based on a true story: the French. The story led us to Marseille in 1975. Pierre Michel, played by Jean Dujardin, a young magistrate from Metz with wife and children, is appointed judge of organized crime.
He decides to tackle French Connection, a mafia organization that exports heroin worldwide. Listening to no warnings, judge Michel goes alone as a crusade against Gaëtan Zampa (Gilles Lellouche), an emblematic figure of the environment and untouchable godfather. But he will quickly understand that, to obtain results, he must change his methods.
French gangsters
Captivating and breathless, the French therefore relates the confrontation between judge Michel and Gaëtan Zampa, a major figure in banditry in the Marseillaise, the source of all kinds of trafficking. Also known as the pseudonyms “Tany” and “Don Gaetano”, Zampa built a real crime empire in the south of France.
Posting, racketeering, robberies, drug trafficking internationally … The godfather was raging on all fronts. A young magistrate responding to the name of Pierre Michel was therefore dispatched to the Marseille city in 1975, in order to put a brake on his criminal actions.

Jean Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche are masterful in the role of these two great figures, inhabited by their respective roles. From the outset, Cédric Jimenez knew that the two artists would be the main actors of the film. He also wrote, with Audrey Diwan, the script for them.
His choice stopped on these actors for their talent but also for their striking resemblance to judge Michel and Gaëtan Zampa. In addition, Cédric Jimenez and Audrey Diwan decided to embark on an unprecedented approach to relate this story.
An approach never seen
It is the first time that it has been adapted to the cinema from the point of view of judge Pierre Michel. The first two films on the organization (French Connection, French Connection 2) were shot from the point of view of American inspectors.
Cédric Jimenez, who from the start chose to tell this story through Pierre Michel, said: “The judge is a hero, an exceptional man who has passed collective interest before his personal interest, which is rare in the world in which we live.” This point of view makes all the salt of the French, which will massively appeal to the spectators. The film will bring together 1.5 million curious people when it was released in December 2014.
