Household appliances have in common with gym memberships, that they continue to drain our money even when we are not using them! And if the sleep mode is supposed to limit our bills, it is far from canceling it completely… quite the contrary.
1. PC Central Unit + screen + standby device = 23 euros per year for electricity
€1.9 each month is the cost of your laziness shutting down your computer yourself, relying on the default settings of the latter to shut itself down in your absence. Except that appearances are deceiving and behind the black screens, the electricity continues to run the meters as evidenced by this little red light which flashes – and which you don’t give a damn about – which nevertheless alerts you that your bank account is in being siphoned off slowly… but surely!

6. The internet box = 6.8 euros of electricity per year
In truth, your internet access costs you much more than the cost of your subscription. The fault with the box which consumes electricity as soon as a device is connected to it in wifi or by Ethernet, that is to say almost all the time. On average, a box would consume 200KW each year, i.e. around twenty euros in electricity alone. To save energy, the Government has just asked ISPs to update their customers’ boxes so that they can go into standby mode after a certain period of non-use. A measure that should allow us to make significant savings on our future bills while participating in the national “energy sobriety” effort.
7. The digital photo frame: 5.8 euros of electricity per year
An additional reason to immediately get rid of this antique almost as energy-intensive as that good old DVD player which collects dust but which still pumps the equivalent of 6.5 euros of electricity each year!
8. The game console: 4.6 euros of electricity per year
44% of the energy used by an Xbox One and 32% of that used by the PS4 would be when the console is in standby mode! (ps. we don’t have the info for new gen consoles) The solution to save electricity is therefore to unplug your console when you’re not using it, but also to use the battery or batteries ( rechargeable) of the controllers rather than their power cable.
9. The laptop: 4.2 euros of electricity per year
More economical than its cousin the central unit accompanied by its screen, the laptop is nonetheless a big energy glutton even when it goes into standby. But there is worse, a laptop even off continues to pump electricity, when it is connected to its charger! To avoid this waste, simply unplug your computer and then turn it off completely.
10. The microwave oven: 2.9 euros of electricity per year
Microwaves, maximum waste! However, we would almost want to forgive him so much he helps us on a daily basis. And if we really want to limit our energy impact, we can unplug it after each use, or even simpler, turn off the power strip to which it is connected.
