Day 1: Reaching Base Camp

distance: 294 km

route: Haridwar – Rishikesh – Devprayag – Rudraprayag – Karnprayag – Chamoli – Joshimath – Govindghat.

Means of transport: Shared Sumo, pre-paid taxi or bus

Time: 9 hours (with lunch and evening tea break)

The camp at Govindghat is located at a distance of 294 km from the nearest railway station. Haridwar Junction. From the railway station, one can take a shared Tata Sumo, pre-paid private taxi or Garhwal Mandal bus. When going upwards via Devprayag and Joshimath, a picturesque view of the mountains is visible. A short journey of 5.7 km from Ghangaria Camping Ground takes you to Sri Hemkunt Sahib. This part of the trek is more difficult due to the steep climb.
