How do you show the speed of the fastest electric boat in the world? Race against a Tesla Model 3, of course. This is the stunt that the makers of the Candela Seven, a next-generation hydrofoil with a top speed of 30 knots, recently took part for a German TV show called Automobile.
“Candela Seven is the first electric boat that can keep up with competitors for fossil fuels in terms of range and speed,” said PR manager Mikael Mahlberg to Digital Trends. “We are far superior in all other areas, such as seafaring in rough waves, travel costs and the maintenance burden. It’s just a trailblazer for maritime transport. ”
Cologne and Düsseldorf
The race took place between Cologne and Düsseldorf, two cities connected by the Rhine. In the end, the competition between the two vehicles was impressively close – even though Tesla managed to win. To be clear, this wasn’t an apple comparison. The top speed of a Tesla Model 3 is 155 mph, which makes it more than four times as fast as the Candela Seven. “Since our boat doesn’t keep watch, you can go fast in no-wake zones,” Mahlberg continued. “On the Rhine, we could basically drive from city center to city center at full speed. The Tesla Model 3 Long Range is the most efficient electric car in the world. So we thought this would be a great fit for the most energy-efficient boat in the world. ”
The Candela Seven is an impressive creation
Aside from the racing gimmicks, the Candela Seven is an impressive creation. Using hydrofoils under the hull helps the seven jump across the water’s surface. This reduces friction by 80% and results in a range of 92 km, which is roughly three times the range of conventional electric boats.
The Candela Seven is in series production. It can accommodate up to five people and costs around $ 240,000. “We have built 16 boats so far, half of which are in Sweden and the rest mainly in Silicon Valley,” said Mahlberg. “It’s become an ‘it boat’ over there among software entrepreneurs.”
